Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency hosts videos, comments and an analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and a prestigious feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource for education that examines women's roles in pop culture narratives, is her brainchild. She also serves as the executive director. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. In addition, Sarkeesian highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women and other minorities which are left out. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Political and Social Thinking from York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by issues of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. She was a young woman who wanted to create an online series which would explore gender roles in video games. In the end, she ended up being the victim of online harassment. It was not enough to stop her. It actually made her more committed to be a feminist as well as media critic.
