Marcia Gay Harden, born 14 August 1959 in San Diego, California, was the daughter of Beverly who was a homewife and Thad an US Navy officer. The mother also has three siblings and a brother. Her father was a diplomat and family members frequently moved. They resided in many countries around the world including Germany, Japan, Greece, and Germany. After arriving in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and earned a bachelor's in acting. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, in 1988, in order to receive her MFA.
