
DeWitt began performing on stage at the age of 13. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. In her summer production she was enticed by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her portrayal of Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 period of sitcom Three's Company, a job she obtained after being selected for the show's second pilot. She also played Janet in an episode in 1979 of the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt made her acting debut in an episode in 1984 of Three's Company. The stage was her first time back to the stage in June 1991 when she played a part on the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress also was a part of Spring Fling, which was a 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain featured characters that were modeled after her voice by another actress in 1997. She was also in an episode of Cybill. Her television shows from the 2000s include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as along with Call of the Wild.
